5 TIPS FOR USING STATEMENT WALLPAPER TO ADD PERSONALITY TO YOUR HOME
Statement wallpaper can be a fantastic design choice, often surprising and delighting even those wallpaper skeptics out there! It serves as a remarkable paint alternative, infusing rooms with artistic flair and creating conversation-starting focal points. Its bold patterns and colors can truly transform a space, making it a valuable addition to interior design.
1.) Pick Whether to Play it Safe or Go Big and Bold
To use statement wallpaper sparingly as an accent wall, select a wall that naturally draws attention, like the one behind a bed or sofa, and apply the wallpaper there. In contrast, for a small room that can handle the boldness all around, choose a wallpaper with a captivating pattern or color scheme and cover all the walls. In my career, I’ve seen both approaches successfully executed; for instance, a bedroom with a subtle, textured wallpaper behind the headboard or a small powder room with a vibrant, all-encompassing wallpaper that amplifies the room’s personality. A pantry or laundry area can be another great place to execute this design concept. I designed my Butler’s Pantry with goat themed wallpaper, simply because my husband loves goats! Don’t be afraid to have a little fun in the design process and bring in those personal touches.
2.) Select a Single Pattern or Creatively Mix and Match
Using statement wallpaper doesn’t limit you to a single pattern; mixing and matching various patterns, textures, colors, and even installation directions can add depth and a high-end designer quality to a space. Combining complementary or contrasting wallpapers on different walls or using a bold wallpaper as a backdrop for a gallery wall can create a visually engaging and dynamic interior design scheme.
3.) Find Furniture that Complements or Enhances the Look
Selecting furniture and decor that is neutral or complementary to the statement wallpaper is essential to allow the wallpaper to take center stage in the design. However, incorporating a variety of textures in the room, even with neutral pieces, is still crucial to add depth and visual interest. Different textures can create contrast and tactile appeal, enhancing the overall ambiance while ensuring the wallpaper remains the focal point.
4.) Broaden the Horizons and Reach Beyond the Room’s Walls
Wallpaper can be applied creatively beyond just walls and can be used as a backdrop for built-in shelving, wet bars, ceilings, and other architectural elements. For instance, I’ve seen it used as a striking backdrop for open shelving in a kitchen, adding a pop of color and pattern to an otherwise neutral space. Additionally, using wallpaper on a ceiling can bring an unexpected and captivating dimension to a room, making it appear larger or cozier depending on the chosen design.
5.) Pair the Paper with Curated Art or Let it Shine Alone
Wallpaper doesn’t have to serve solely as a backdrop; it can pair beautifully with a curated art collection. However, it’s important to strike a balance to avoid visual competition. For instance, in a living room, using a subtly patterned wallpaper as a backdrop for carefully selected art pieces can create a harmonious and visually pleasing environment, allowing the artwork to shine while adding depth to the space.
